Euraxess Norway is the national portal on recruitment, career development and mobility of researchers. The portal, which is hosted by the Research Council of Norway, is the natural starting point for researchers who are considering, or in the process of, moving to Norway.
After successfully applying for a job at UiA, you should apply for a visa and a work or residence permit as soon as possible. We collaborate with Business Region Kristiansand on this process.
UIA has no separate housing service for incoming academic staff. Your Faculty may be able to help you make arrangements for short-term accommodation if necessary. Please speak to the contact at your Faculty.
On the Euraxess Norway portal you will find useful information concerning accomodation in Norway.
PhD students may apply for accommodation to the Student Association (SiA), both single – room and family flats. Please note that salaried PhD students pay a 30 % higher rent than ordinary students. Student Association rooms and flats are not equipped with bedlinen or kitchen utensils.
The quickest way of getting to the university campuses in Kristiansand and Grimstad from abroad is to travel by plane to Kristiansand Airport, Kjevik. The airport has regular flight connections to Oslo, Copenhagen, Gdansk and Amsterdam, all within a 1.5 hour flight from Kristiansand.
Kristiansand: The easiest way of getting from the airport to the city centre/campus in Kristiansand is by taxi. The ride takes approximately 20 mins and costs c. EUR 40. There is no specially scheduled airport bus service at Kjevik, but there are local bus connections which can be used (best for daytime flights).
The university does not offer any regular pick-up service, but you are nevertheless advised to check with your contact at the Faculty about whether such a service may be arranged.
Grimstad: For those travelling to Grimstad, there is an airport bus serving the route Kjevik – Grimstad – Arendal.
Long-distance bus. Approx. 4.5 hours from Oslo to Grimstad, 5 hours from Oslo to Kristiansand.
Three bus companies offer transport.

You do not need to apply for a work or residence permit. Researchers from some countries must obtain a visitor's visa before they can enter Norway. Please contact the nearest Norwegian Embassy/Consulate General.
Once you have received a job offer, please make sure you have a work and/or residence permit if you are going to stay longer than 90 days in Norway.
Nordic citizens may stay and work in Norway indefinitely without a permit.
Researchers from EU/EEA/EFTA countries can freely travel to Norway and start working as soon as they arrive. In order to stay in Norway for more than 3 months, however, you still need a residence permit. EU/EEA/EFTA citizens may apply at a Norwegian Embassy/Consulate General or from within Norway to the local police or through the Service Centre for Foreign Workers in Oslo or Stavanger.
Researchers from outside the EU/EEA/EFTA countries must obtain a work and residence permit before they can enter Norway and start working. Citizens from non-EU/EEA countries will have to submit their application at the nearest Norwegian Embassy/Consulate General to obtain a visa/permit. Once in Norway, they have to register at the local police station.
The processing of visas and residence and work permits may be very time-consuming (see case-processing time). Be sure to carefully complete the appropriate application form and to submit all required documents well in advance of your planned date of arrival in Norway. This will ensure correct and time-efficient processing of your application by the involved authorities.
