Anaelle Therese Milena Petre

PhD Candidate in Applied Economics

Anaëlle Petre is a PhD Candidate in Applied Economics, her research focus is on financial inclusion and microfinance in developing countries, more specifically on the financial and social impact of "savings groups", informal community-based groups offering financial services to their members. She works under the supervision of Roy Mersland (UiA) and Bert D'Espallier (KUL, Belgium).

Prior to that, she graduated with honors from a Master in Economic Analysis and European Policy and a B.SC. in Economics at the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management (Université libre de Bruxelles). Her Master thesis focused on the impact of microcredit on women empowerment in Morocco, under the supervision of Professor P. Verwimp (ULB).

Relevant previous work experiences include teaching Introduction to Microeconomics and Macroeconomics to first year Bachelor students (Solvay Brussels School) and an internship at Innovations for Poverty Action in Ghana in developing and implementing  new research projects in various sectors (Social Protection, Financial Inclusion, SME, and Child Protection) in partnership with academic researchers and government authorities.

Research interests

Research focus: the financial and social impact of savings groups. Savings groups are informal community-based saving and borrowing associations that facilitate the access to financial services for unbanked populations.

Courses and teaching

2017 to 2019: Teaching assistant in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics to first year B.Sc. students.

Work experience

Feb. 2020 - June 2020: Intern at Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) in Accra (Ghana). Role: Assisting in developing new research projects in various sectors such as Social Protection, Financial Inclusion, SME,  and Child Protection. This involves in-depth reviews of existing academic literature, conducting preliminary research and interviews with local experts, coordination with local partner organizations, research design, the preparation of grant applications and attending various business development meetings with external stakeholders and potential partners.

Sept. 2018- Dec. 2018: Trainee at the European Commission - Directorate General for Competition in unit D1-Antitrust in Payment Systems. Duties include data analysis in Excel, market research, preparing and assisting meetings with market players and work in team on different antitrust cases.
