Kristian Mjåland is associate professor in sociology at the Department of sociology and social work. He earned his PhD in sociology from the Universtiy of Bergen in 2015. Mjåland has previously worked at Uni Research Rokkansenteret in Bergen and at the University of Cambridge. Mjåland’s research interests are mainly concerned with punishment, prisons, drugs, and coercive treatment. He is primarily a qualitative researcher, with considerable experience from ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative interviewing. Comparative penology has been his main research priorities the last few years. Theoretically, his research explores issues such as penal power, resistance, punishment, legitimacy and procedural justice. He is currently study program leader for the bachelor and master program in sociology. He teaches the bachelor course SV-218 (Deviance, crime and punishment) and the master course SV-436 (Crime control and punishment in the Nordic countries). Mjåland supervises bachelor-, master-, and PhD-students. Mjåland is a visiting scholar at the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge.
