Stefan Schmager

PhD Research Fellow

Office:
H1073 ( Universitetsveien 25, Kristiansand )

I hold a B.A. in Information Design from Stuttgart Media University in Germany and a M.Sc. in Interaction Design from the Cyprus University of Technology and Tallinn University. For almost a decade I have worked as an Interaction- and User Experience Designer in design agencies, academic research projects, startups as well as international software companies. I was involved in various AI product development projects, working with data scientists and engineers on technologies like computer vision, natural language processing as well as building virtual agents. Previous to my time as a designer, I was also working within the public service, specifically the federal employment agency in Germany for about seven years.

Research interests

I've always been fascinated by the question of what it means to be a designer and how design as a discipline can contribute to a more just and sustainable world? Design as a discipline gets constantly overlooked and underutilized in the development of new technologies. But it's my firm belief that design knowledge and skills are crucial assets in mitigating biases, discrimination and to enable human flourishing. To craft the required changes and to define novel competencies and knowledge is what motivates me.
