PhD Candidate

Guodong Liang will defend his PhD thesis Numerical and Experimental Study of Shared Mooring Systems for Prototype Floating Wind Farm 26 October 2023.

Summary of the thesis

The concept of shared mooring is new to the offshore wind industry. A floating wind farm with this type of mooring system is comprised of interconnected floating offshore wind turbines. The innovative concept holds promising cost-saving potential, but a comprehensive evaluation is essential before practical application. In this research, numerical investigations and model test campaigns have been carried out for floating wind farms with two spar floating wind turbines and various types of shared mooring systems. The dynamic response behaviors of the wind turbine systems with shared mooring are compared to those without. Additionally, comparisons are made among different shared mooring systems. The results reveal interesting findings, benefits and disadvantages, and the potential for design improvements of shared mooring systems.
