Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should:

  • be familiar with various artistic methods and strategies for creative and inventive work.
  • Have an understanding of aesthetic tools and techniques, as well as esthetics related to specific materials
  • Be able to apply basic tools, techniques, and materials and experiment with these when working with visual expressions.
  • Be able to justify choices in practical-aesthetic work.
  • Be able to use appropriate media, including digital ones, for the documentation and presentation of their own creative processes.
  • Acquire experience from their own workshop work to develop individual projects.
  • Present examples of art mediation through work-life relevant practice.

Contents

The course provides an introduction to various artistic methods and strategies through hands-on practical work. Students will receive HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) training in well-equipped workshops and will be introduced to various tools, machines, and techniques. There is an emphasis on knowledge of materials and material context, also from a sustainability perspective. Students will become acquainted with different formats for critical evaluation of their own and others' work, through documentation and dissemination of their own processes. Digital media is one of the tools offered for different presentation formats. Students will practice professional communication through 1 week of art didactic practice in an art/culture institution.

Teaching and learning methods

In the course, students will work with practical-aesthetic projects in the workshop. Teaching is provided both as group instruction and individual guidance. The Department of Visual and Drama collaborates closely with Kunstsilo where students work in groups on art mediation. Student exhibitions will form the basis for discussion and evaluation of student works.

A prerequisite for qualifying to sit the exam is that students work independently beyond the teacher-led instruction to a great extent. The workshops will be available for students' independent work when they are not in use for other teaching.

Optional study trips are planned.

Attendance is mandatory in teaching, during excursions, and guidance.

The expected workload is 27 hours per study credit.

Examinations

An individual practical-aesthetic project with an accompanying reflection note of approximately 800 words. The project is visually presented in an exhibition. The reflection note is to be submitted three days before the practical work is exhibited. A combined grade is given in Inspera after the exhibition.

Student evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
