Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should:

  • Have knowledge of key art historical epochs from antiquity to modernism.
  • Have knowledge of aesthetic expressions of art.
  • Be familiar with basic aesthetic theory.
  • Be able to apply key technical terms in written and oral descriptions of artistic expressions.
  • Have knowledge of and be able to apply the description and analysis of individual artworks.
  • Be able to communicate central academic content such as theories and academic issues, both in writing and orally.

Contents

The course will provide students with knowledge of key art historical epochs from antiquity to modernism. The main focus will be on Western art history and aesthetic theory, but global perspectives will be incorporated where appropriate. Emphasis will be placed on painting and sculpture expressions, but architecture and decorative arts will also be included. Students will receive an introduction to key art historical terms, as well as practice in the description and analysis of artworks.

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching is provided both as lectures, seminars, and during excursions. The course also includes writing workshops with text production, and exhibitions will form the basis for discussion. The work requirements presuppose that students work independently to a large extent beyond the teacher-led instruction. Voluntary study trips are planned.

Attendance is mandatory in teaching, excursions, and guidance.

The expected workload is 27 hours per study credit.

The exam is a 5-hour individual written school exam.

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
