Compulsory teaching in BIO111 or ML115 must be passed.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
have broad knowledge of key themes, theories and issues about proteins and DNA molecule and the processes in which they are involved.
be aware of how different traits in plants, animals and humans is expressed coupled to individual genetic composition
have in-depth knowledge of a variety of basic genetic engineering techniques and how these can be used in research and routine investigations and be able to use more of these techniques
be able to convey the central subject matter through detailed laboratory reports
Contents
The course provides an introduction and overview of basic and essential molecular genetic issues. It will cover the DNA molecule's structure, organization, replication, mutation, repair etc. Furthermore, protein synthesis and regulation of genes in different cells and the environment will be taught, including RNAi. In addition to this and other basic subjects will be taught in molecular genetic linkage with hereditary and non hereditary diseases, the use of genetic engineering techniques for the study of traits, diseases, vaccine development, etc. Gene techniques such as cloning of DNA, the DNA library, cDNA synthesis, transcription assays, PCR, real time PCR, DNA sequencing, SNP, microsatellites, molecular genetic detection of microorganisms from various sources etc will be covered. Ethical dilemmas connected to this knowledge and techniques are discussed. Through lab exercises, students will practice various molecular genetic techniques to obtain complementary knowledge and experience with them.
Teaching and learning methods
Instruction is provided in the form of lectures, group work and laboratory exercises. Attendance is obligatory for all laboratory work. It requires submission and approval of reports from all exercises. It is anticipated scope of work 270 hours for the course.

Attendance at all mandatory laboratory exercises must be approved and all assignments must be passed, see Canvas for more information.
Examinations
A 4-hour written examination under supervision. Graded assessment.
Student evaluation
