NTNU and MatRIC would like to welcome you to The 1st Northern e-Assessment Meeting. This is an informal conference for people interested in e-Assessment in Mathematical Sciences at higher education level, arranged in Trondheim, 31 May–2 June, 2023.
The aim of the meeting is to bring together educators, researchers and practitioners with an interest in e-assessment for mathematics, science and programming.
The focus of the meeting will be on types of questions and assessment of students’ replies in a way that facilitates learning. The content will consist of a mix of up-to-date research, best practice-presentations, and experience exchange.
It will be an in-person meeting arranged at the hotel Scandic Nidelven in Trondheim. In addition, possibilities of remote participation are now investigated. Besides the presentations, the meeting will offer plenty of opportunities for discussion and collaboration.
NTNU and MatRIC will cover the conference fee for all participants, this including accommodation, lunch, dinner, and coffee all days.
The meeting will start with lunch at 11.30 on 31 May and finish after lunch at 13.00 on 2 June. Please note that registration will take place on Wednesday from 10.30.
Slides from presentations
Many participants ask if the slides from contributions will be available. The speakers may send their slides by e-mail to Elisabeth Rasmussen. Then, we will make them available on this web page later. Please make sure the slides don’t include pictures that you are not allowed to publish without consent from the owner.
Instructions for submitting abstract
We invite to contribute to The 1st Northern e-Assessment meeting. Your abstract of maximum 300 words shall give the participants a good view of what your contribution will be about. In addition, the abstract is the basis for the organisers’ assessment of which talks to include in the programme. We welcome “regular talks”, but also encourage inter-activity with the participants. The time slot for your talk will be 30 minutes. Feel free to choose any theme in line with the conference focus. The organisers also provide a list of suggested themes, which might give you some ideas.
The registration of abstracts is closed.

Furthermore, the conference organisers offer some limited financial support for participants whose paper has been accepted, but who do not have the means to attend. If this is your case, you may contact Elisabeth Rasmussen; elisabeth.rasmussen@uia.no.
Abstract submission deadline: Contact organisers
Notification of accepted abstract: Continuously
Conference registration deadline: April 13

Abstract: This software is the result of a several design challenges.
In this presentation I will show how we worked on these challenges and how we struggled. I will present the resulting software and I will be happy to discuss the choices we have made. |

Abstract: Asking students to generate examples of mathematical objects has been suggested as an effective way to develop their understanding of mathematical concepts. Using e-assessment makes it possible to give students feedback on their examples, in a way that might be infeasible for paper-based tasks due to the effort involved in checking examples from large numbers of students. However, translating paper-based tasks to e-assessment may change their nature, and the way that students approach them. We will report on data from two cohorts of students completing the same sequence of tasks on paper (N=333) and through e-assessment (N=322). We found that the students completing the e-assessment version of the tasks scored significantly lower than students completing the tasks on paper, and gave different types of answers. Task-based interviews with 19 further students completing the same task sequence (11 on paper and 8 through e-assessment) reflected a similar pattern. Our analysis of the students' solution strategies offers a possible explanation: the students completing the e-assessment tasks used less sophisticated example-generation strategies than the students completing the tasks on paper. We will discuss the implications of these results for the use of e-assessment. |

Abstract: Ideally, automated feedback should be as adaptable to the student's response as feedback from an experienced teacher. Whereas in analogue teaching feedback is usually situational and intuitive, for "a priori" programming of feedback in assessment software it is helpful to know of the different types, forms and structures from which to choose. This talk will give an overview of what we currently know about successful automatic feedback. It will also propose some feedback models for adaptive feedback programming that are intended to foster active rather than receptive learning. |

The first two days of the meeting will take place at Scandic Nidelven hotel Trondheim, where we also have lunch, dinner and accommodation. Accommodation will be covered by NTNU and MatRIC.
On Thursday afternoon, there is time for excursions on your own or in spontaneous group arrangements. Some suggestions of activities.
Please note that the last day of the meeting will be held at NTNU Kalvskinnet, Arkitekt Christies gate 2, building E, room KA-EA 120. We will move to the new location after breakfast Friday morning, and the first session will start 09.15. Due to Google Maps, this is a 1,6 km walk, and each participant is free to decide how to carry out that transport.
