Stein Oluf Kristiansen

Professor Stein Kristiansen holds a cand.polit. degree from University of Bergen and cand.merc. and PhD degrees from the Norwegian School of Economics. He has worked full time with UiA since 1989 and previously held positions at Agder Research Foundation and Norwegian School of Economics. His specialization is in development studies. He is currently an Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Indonesia.

He has published articles on topics such as entrepreneurship and innovation, governance and corruption, the digital divide, common pool resource management, and economic linkages in journals such as Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies, Contemporary Southeast Asia, European Journal of Development Research,The International Information and Library Review, International Journal of Educational Development, andHealth Policy.

He was for many years the leader of the Development Studies Program under the Department of Economics at UiA and has 30 years of experience in building networks and managing cooperation with universities in Africa and Asia. He has been the leader of several institutional cooperation and research programs funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NORAD. He is currently in charge of Internship programs for Master students working in Norwegian enterprises in Norway, China, India, Indonesia and Tanzania.

Professor Kristiansen has recently given public lectures or talks on the Nordic Development Model at cooperating universities in India (JNU) and Indonesia (UGM). He is an Editorial Board member of two international journals on economics and management, based at UGM in Indonesia (Gadjah Mada International Journal of Business andJournal of Indonesian Economy and Business). 

He is currently the study program coordinator for ASEAN Master in Sustainability Management, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Academic interests

Professor Kristiansen is currently engaged in research on common pool resource management in peripheral parts of Indonesia. Focus is set on possibilities to increase land-use efficiency in areas with communal land ownership, which is the custom in major parts of poor economies. New Institutional Economics is used as the main theoretical basis for this research.

He is teaching and counselling in courses such as ‘Emerging Markets’ and ‘Internship in High-Growth Economies’, and he is supervising Master and PhD students working on issues such as entrepreneurship, business entry modes, good governance and creative industries.
