Industrial Mathematics, Bachelor's Programme

Admission requirements

Admission to the programme requires three years of mathematics studies at the upper secondary school level.

Recommended previous knowledge

Two years of physics and three years of mathematics at upper secondary school level.

General description and profile of the programme

The aim of the programme is to provide basic knowledge in mathematics and statistics. The second year is an optional one-year program elected.

The courses Nonlinear Differential Equations and Dynamic Systems (MA-310) and Fourier Analysis (MA-313) is taught every even-numbered year. And the courses Numerical Linear Algebra (MA-311) and Stochastic Processes (MA-312) is taught every odd-numbered year. The courses are given jointly to students in the first semester of the master's program in mathematics and the fifth semester of the bachelor's program in industrial mathematics. The rule applies from autumn 2024.

Autumn 2024 is the course MA-310 and MA-313 taught.

Learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE

On successful completion of the programme, the student

  • has broad knowledge of key topics, theories, issues, proceccec, tools and methods within the subject areas mathematics, statistics and physics
  • is familiar with research and development work, especially in recent applications
  • can update him/herself, and acquire expanded knowledge, within the subject area
  • has insight into the subject area's history, traditions, uniqueness and significance for society

SKILLS

On successful completion of the programme, the student

  • can apply knowledge and relevant results from research and development work in mathematics, programming, statistics and physics in practical and theoretical issues in industry, administration and business, and justify their choices
  • can use software relevant to applications of mathematics and statistics, especially for interpreting and understanding large amounts of data
  • can use relevant academic tools, techniques and forms of expression to be able to transform current physical problems into mathematical language
  • can find, evaluate and refer to information and subject matter and present this so that it sheds light on a current issue in a work situation
  • can reflect on his/her own professional practice and adjust this under supervision

GENERAL COMPETENCE

On successful completion of the programme, the student

  • can familiarize his/herself with theories and problems within industrial mathematics, process these and communicate proposed solutions to others
  • is able to model phenomena using knowledge of mathematics, statistics, physics and informatics and can analyze the models mathematically and use numerical and statistical calculation techniques
  • has insight into relevant professional and ethical issues
  • can plan and carry out varied work tasks and projects that extend over time, alone or as a participant in an interdisciplinary team
  • can communicate views and experiences with others and through this contribute to the development of good practice in a work situation
  • Has insight in new innovation processes within industrial mathematics

Teaching and learning methods

Instruction comprises lectures, computer lab work, work in small groups, and laboratory work. There are compulsory tasks and project work in all courses.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based upon final written and oral examinations, and project report. There will be final examinations in all courses. Please see separate course descriptions for more information.

Internationalization

In 5. semester there are possibilities for studying abroad.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies

With an education in mathematics, there are many possible jobs. For example, in industries with research and development departments, various engineering and technology companies, oil industry, media, administration, education, mapping, environmental monitoring, mobile communications, multimedia application, insurance, banking and finance, IT, energy, biotechnology, medical research, pharmaceutical industry and hospitals.

The program provides good background for further studies in mathematics and subjects such as physics, geophysics and mechanics, and for studies in engineering and other sciences. The program qualifies for admission to Masterprogram in Mathematics at the University of Agder. The study, together with a master's degree qualify for admission to teacher training in general subjects (PPU-A) at the University of Agder, and provide the opportunity for employment in schools. It's then important to choose a teaching subject in the second year.

Student evaluations

Study programme evaluation is carried out in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 2.3.1., by way of an annual evaluation in the study programme committee with student representatives from each class/year in the programme.

Last semester can be offered in english.

It is a requirement that all students at UiA have their own portable computer (`laptop¿) for use in teaching and examinations, see Examination Regulations, University of Agder, §12d
