After course completion the students must have achieved the following:
The course provides practical and theoretical introduction to directing and dramaturgy. The course aims to enable students to realise ideas, as well as to analyse and conceptualize ideas based on an understanding of principles of theatre production.
The course combines analytical knowledge and artistic reflections with the management of artistic and didactic processes. The connection between preparation, development and execution is fundamental. At each phase of production and staging, a number of methods will be reviewed and tested. Students gain knowledge of analysis of text, context and other material. They gain knowledge of development of concept, staging methods, planning of rehearsal schedules, personal directing techniques and other directors’ activities.
The course provides the individual student the opportunity to incorporate a placement/ field assignment as part of an individual project assignment.
The course comprises lectures, workshops and individual artistic practice, as well as the opportunity for 3 weeks placement with a professional theatre project.
Some classes in select subject matters are mandatory. These will be highlighted on Canvas at the start of the semester.
Expected workload is 27 hours per study point.
