Nina Cecilie Øverby

Professor

Leader of the Priority Research Centre on Lifecourse Nutrition, Program leader for the PhD specialization in Public Health

Office:
I1016 ( Universitetsveien 25, Kristiansand )
Office hours:
08:00-16:00

My main research focus is nutrition in early phases of life ranging from preconception, through pregnancy, childhood and adolescence in relation to health outcomes. Assessing dietary intake, developing interventions to improve diet of mother, child and adolescent in different settings as school and kindergarten, and investigating associations between intake and health and learning outcomes are core activities in my research, in addition to identifying and evaluating health effects of healthy and sustainable diets. I lead the Priority Research Centre of Life Course Nutrition. This Centre includes forty researchers and takes several research approaches in addition to what described above, as kindergarten meals, school meal, school food, the school subject Food and Health, and sustainability.

Research interests

My research focuses on how diet in key developmental phases is related to health later and how to promote a healthy diet during these phases. Our research group has been among the first to show a link between diet in early life and mental health and personality later in life, as an example of our research. We have also shown that digital dietary interventions can promote healthy eating habits among children (Barn-E-mat, Matmot 2.0, Mat til Minsten), evaluated in randomized controlled trials.

In recent years, I have been particularly interested in how we can make effective interventions have a greater impact by implementing them in the health services and the education sector (health centres, kindergartens, schools). The Matnyttig project is an example of this. The research focuses on a life course perspective - where we use knowledge about the importance of food and nutrition in important phases of life, for current and later health, development, learning, mental and physical health.

I lead innovative projects, such as PREPARED, which investigates the importance of nutritional status before pregnancy, where we focus on both women and men.

Courses and teaching

Most of my teaching is on courses in the PhD programme in public health. I also teach and supervise PhD-students and master's students in public health and bachelor's students in nutrition.
